Dandruff

The exact cause of dandruff is unknown. There are several factors that contribute to the development of dandruff.

Causes for dandruff

  • Yeast plays a vital role in the occurrence of dandruff. Yeast-sensitive people who get dandruff remain better in summer as the UVA light from the sun counteracts with yeast. Their condition worsens in winter  because of exposure to cold air and overheated rooms
  • Dry skin leads to the development of dandruff very often. Dry skin is a result of cold air and overheated rooms which cause an itchy and flaky skin.
  • Oily skin is prone to dandruff. This condition known as seborrheic dermatitis affects many areas of the skin in the body. It affects the backs of the ears, eyebrows, and the sides of the nose, and also the scalp.  The symptoms of this condition are red, greasy skin covered with flaky white or yellow scales on any part of the body.
  • Certain skin condition like psoriasis which is a skin condition of fast buildup of dry dead skin cells andeczema which is a chronic inflammatory condition of the skin aggravates the conditions of dandruff.
  • People suffering from Parkinson’s disease and other neurological diseases are prone to dandruff. Patients recovering from heart attacks and people with weak immune system can have more dandruff than others.
  • Dandruff can also be a reaction to hair or skin care products which can irritate the scalp and cause dandruff. Sensitivity to some ingredient in the skin care product, dyes, cosmetic tools like curlers and straighteners, gels and lotions irritate the scalp and create a red itchy scaly scalp.
  • Malassezia is a fungus that lives on all healthy scalps without causing any problems. Sometimes its growth becomes uncontrollable and it starts feeding on the oil secreted from the hair follicles. This tends to irritate the scalp and increase the shedding of excessive dead skin cells. These cells mix with the oil from the scalp and turn into white flakes which fall as dandruff.
  • Irregular shampooing helps to accumulate dead skin cells which become rough and thick and fall as dandruff.
